Acrylic on canvas | Impressionist brush strokes
This painting means a lot to me—it’s my first full ocean piece. I’ve always loved the ocean, especially in Hawai‘i. There’s something truly magical about the way the water changes color—soft turquoise in one moment, deep, mysterious blue the next. Kaimana Beach on Oʻahu was one of my favorite places when I was in grad school. It’s where I’d go to breathe, unwind, and just be with the beauty around me.
For the longest time, I wanted to paint the ocean but kept putting it off. I was scared I wouldn’t be able to express how it really feels. After playing around on smaller canvases, I finally gave it a go—and I’m so glad I did. It’s not perfect, but it’s full of love and the joy of finally letting go.
I used loose, impressionist brush strokes and layered blues to let the ocean come alive on the canvas. “Dream of the Ocean” is for anyone who feels connected to the sea, who’s ever paused to soak in its peace and beauty. It’s a little piece of Hawai‘i, of courage, and of finding your voice—even if it takes time.
